In the game of poker, players make up
hands of five cards according to the preset rules of the poker
game being played. These hands are compared using a standard
ranking system. The player with the highest ranking hand wins
that particular hand.
The ranking of the hand is increased by
having multiple cards of the same rank by either being the same
suit or having consecutive values.
Listed below are the
categories of hands from the highest to the lowest. Any hand in
a higher category beats any hand in the lower category. So for
example any straight flush beats a four of a kind. If more than
one player has the same ranking then the player with the higher
cards wins - a pair of 8's beats a pair of 4's.
A straight from a ten to an ace and
all five cards of the same suit.
Royal Flush
Any straight with all five cards
of the same suit.
Straight Flush
Any four cards of the same rank.
Four of a kind
Any three cards of the same rank
together with any two cards of the same rank.
Full House
Any five cards of the same suit
which are not consecutive.
Flush
Any five consecutive cards of
different suits.
Straight
Any three cards of the same rank.
Three of a kind
Any two cards of the same rank together with another two
cards of the same rank.
